Thanks again for the advice. I called at my local Telstra shop and the helpful guy there could not make it work either. I did a bit more Googling and found this forum subject.
It seems from this that the Windows Mail packaged with Windows 10 is at fault, though some of these people were at least able to download Incoming mail. This thread started a year ago and was still going last April. The Mozilla Thunderbird you mentioned is also recommended, and that is what I shall now do when I make up the time I have wasted on MS Windows Mail 10. I liked this comment, which backs up your good advice:
“Glad someone knows the problem, but what is needed is a fix, I take it Microsoft will be advising that anyone with this problem should download a reliable email client like Mozilla Thunderbird, ie this one actually works, it sends & receives, something Microsoft’s email client can’t do on my Windows 10.”
And I thought all this sort of stuff would have been sorted out in Windows 10 beta testing.
