Receiving emails, however senders are being sent an error message

I am currently using Outlook 2003 to access my emails, and am having no trouble doing so, however whenever someone sends me an email, they are receiving an error message with the following details:

This Message was undeliverable due to the following reason:

Each of the following recipients was rejected by a remote mail server.

The reasons given by the server are included to help you determine why each recipient was rejected.

Recipient: <an old hotmail account that has since been deactivated>

Reason: Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable

Please reply to <Postmaster@mx.bigpond.com> if you feel this message to be in error.

Not sure why this is occuring as the hotmail account has been deactivated previously (to try and avoid these rejection emails being sent to people trying to contact me) - is there any way to remove a potential link between this hotmail account and my bigpond email? I have tried checking on hotmail.com however can no longer access the account as it is deactivated.

Thanks for any help
