You're more than welcome to use a different E-Mail provider, such as Google, Hotmail etc.

E-Mailing is not Telstra's focus as a business, while Bigpond is being moved to Telstra Mail over the coming months, which will hopefully better the experience for some people. It's still not going to be that fantastic. Very little people use Telstra Bigpond as their primary mailing address, and I would almost wholeheartedly recommend a different E-Mail provider.

I'm sure someone could come up with something better, but again, this is not really the focus of the business, nor is it really something customers ask for (because so little use it).
