Re: Mozilla Thunderbird - email set up

A Solution that WORKED for me:

I don't know how my outgoing (smpt) settings got scrambled, but they did. Mail IN was fine but outgoing mail has been problematical and ceased altogether today.

The settings recommended by Telstra did NOT work for me.

The following Account Settings for the Outgoing Server in Mozilla Thunderbird (harvested from the iiNet link in one of the messages above) are:

  • Description: smtp
  • Server Name: mail.bigpond.com
  • Port: 25  [Note that this is nothing like what was recommended]
  • Connection security:  STARTTLS
  • Authentication:  No authentication.

I hope it works for you if you still have the problem,

Regards - Rick

Smiley Sad Christmas is cancelled
It’s taking longer than we had planned, however we anticipate that all your Inbox and personal folders will be restored by 7 April. It will however take up to another two weeks to retrieve your Sent, Deleted and Junk folders. We’ll send you an email once your account has been fixed.

Cannot send email since Friday

Hi,

We have been with telstra for a couple of years now. However we use Optus for email as Telstra does not support Thunderbird. Everything was working fine until Friday last week. I was able to send emails in the morning but have not been able to send emails since Friday evening - almost a week now! I can receive email just can't send. I have spent hours on the phone to both telstra and optus and been told "There is no problem at our end". Has anyone else been through this?

My wife uses another computer and has not been able to send emails also. If it was just my machine I would be inclined to think something had happened but it is two separate machines and both have the same problem and, no, nothing has been updated/changed on them to cause this.

I suspect the problem is at telstra's end since they have made some changes recently and the recorded message mentions ongoing issues and longer than usual wait times. I believe they are blocking ports that prevent connection to the optusnet SMTP server.

Has anyone else come across this and found a way around it?

TIA

Thunderbird is supported by Telstra Mail. It works for both POP and IMAP account settings.

If you use port 25 on the outgoing  Optus SMTP server that could be the cause of the problem as Telstra block traffic on port 25.

If Optus mail supports it try ports

465 with SSL/TLS encryption  or

587 with START/TLS encryption

Thanks cf4. Tried all that all week and again just now without success. The thing is it was working on Friday morning and nothing was changed on either machine so I don't know why it stopped working (other than there was a telstra upgrade). Thunderbird can nonnect to mail.optusnet.com.au to download email. It just won't connect to send so I suspect there is something blocking those ports somewhere on telstra's network.

Are you sure it is the Telstra network causing the problem?

To check if its Telstra network could set up smartphone as mobile hotspot and connect PC to mobile hotspot, or if PC does not have Wi-Fi tether PC to phone using Bluetooth or a USB connection.

Hi swaussie1

There are a few things you can try to narrow down where the issue is.

Test on different browsers on the laptop.

Does it happen when the mobile is attached to the WiFi connection?

Leave ADSL modem off for at least 15 minutes so it is assigned a new IP address.

Try changing DNS addresses to see if that allows the request through the ADSL.

As per usual Telstra are trying to fix BIGPOND. The only thing is "why fix something that ain't broke.  Smiley Frustrated They are fools in the upper floors. Over the last 12 onths they have been trying to "Fix the back Door Entry to their  stupid system." But the brains are dull. Whilst they have been fixing the ermail the rats have been in the back door and got exacly what they wanted. It seem strange that no other telc has the problems Telstra have.

Hi 33534923

Seems interesting that emails are being forwarded to another device.

If you are using webmail on the PC then go into settings > mail > auto-forward

If you are using an email program like Office Outlook then you can check the forward settings https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Forward-and-redirect-email-automatically-9f124e4a-749e-4288-a266-2d009686b403

I would also suggest checking the Mail settings in your tablet to make sure there is not a profile with your Bigpond email also configured.

Hi Philwill,

I was able to liaise with a Supervisor regarding my (our) situation. I very briefly had access on the 28th but missing emails since the 14th March when this all started, then it became compromised once again. Telstra provided me with plantinum support for free, remotely gaining access to my computer to try sort the issue, Telstra has accepted that after all attempts that their email server is the issue and not my computer sending spam.... Wooohooo, the 1st resolution in two weeks.

Unfortunately, telstra will not call back until the 31st when it was claimed in an earlier Crowd support  "Status Update" that this matter will be resolved, so no emails, until telstra sorts this out.

TommyR https://crowdsupport.telstra.com.au/t5/Announcements/Telstra-Email-issue-updated-17-03-2017/ba-p/660...

This link has been update, it looks our wait could be another week; 7th April.

I have expressed my grievances and Teslstra has agreed to wave the early exit fee from my bundled contract should I choose to go with another provider.

All the best.

Help. My mum has over 1000 spam emails old and new in her inbox  how does she get rid of them and stop them coming.  She uses outlook on an older I pad and it is filling up her memory.   I have searched everywhere for help on Telstra site all I can find is Telstra mail this and that.  What is Telstra mail and how is it different from normal mail?    Also why does Telstra not have any spam filters?    Help please.

Can you please advise how to delete it from my system/

Does anyone no what is going on with the bigpond email as I haven't been able to access my bigpond email since 26/02/2017.  It can't possible be the ANTI-VIRUS as it's Telstra's own. I was getting a lot of unsolicited eMail that I reported. I've changed my password umteen times even Telstra has changed it. Still no email. I am giving my eMail address for answers if anyone has any but I dought I will see them. All reason given for inactiation don't apply  as I have done every thing and don't owe Telstra my Account is in credit the only thing I can think is I'm still ADSL as the NBN hasn't arrived yet
