Emails vanish from webmail inbox, email forwarding does not work

$

Emails arrive in inbox, are visible for maybe 20 minutes, then disappear. This happens when I am looking at Webmail but I suspect it happens when I am not as I've not had an email to bigpond for months.

I have set automatic call forwarding on so that I get them in my gmail account for the few services that I've not been able to change email address from bigpond. But nothing is coming through and there are no emails in bigpond sent folder.

I think the forwarding worked when I set it up a few months ago, after migratyion to webmail, which was a disaster that left me with no service for weeks.

Any ideas anyone?

If the mail.bigpond.com configuration works, then I would continue to use it. Server settings may change in future but we update the settings in the Support FAQs on the Telstra.com.au website.

I'd like to say I'm surprised at how long its taken Telstra to respond adequately to this but I'm not. I just signed up as I came across this issue for someone.

This error is SPF related.

A few posters have picked up the key factor here is when you send to an address that is then forwarded to a bigpond.net.au recipient.

The reason is this; bigpond.net.au sees an email come in from xxx@yourdomain.com.au, however the source IP is no longer your email server / system but that of the forwarding mailbox yyy@forwardeddomain.com.au.

When Bigponds email servers query yourdomain.com.au for an SPF record the list of valid sending servers does not contain those of forwardeddomain.com.au.

The last piece of information in your SPF record is the enforcement rule. This tells Bigpond what to do with an email that comes in where the originating IP does not match a record in your SPF record.

By and large the recommendation is to use '-all' which reads "Fail all" as in, fail all messages with sending servers that aren't approved in the SPF record. If you use Office 365 you will almost certainly have -all at the end of your SPF record.

So what's changed? Well seeing as this has only just cropped up, Telstra has started enforcing strict SPF on bigpond.net.au because this is nothing new.

What can you do? Wait for Bigpond/Telstra to change back to the previous policy OR adjust your SPF record (change enforcement rule to ~all for soft fail however this does defeat the purpose) &/or implement additional protections such as DKIM.

Edit: For technical reference you can review example 3 in the following technet article https://technet.microsoft.com/en-au/library/mt712724(v=exchg.150).aspx

Have you had a resolution to this issue.   I have spent 5 hours chatting and on phone and no one seems to be able to help with this problem

Am so glad to hear you cannot read your emails as I have been having the same issue  and I was made to feel that I was the only one that had this problem.

I open the email and it's blank. I rang Telstra and the person on the phone said someone in her office was having the same problem. She advised that they would send it to the technicians to fix.

On very rear occasions, if f I am lucky enough to receive an email that I can read and try to reply, the return email is missing content from the previous email.  Fortunately, someone else also has this problem and posted to Telstra.

https://crowdsupport.telstra.com.au/t5/Telstra-and-or-BigPond-Email/When-replying-to-an-email-the-previous-content-is-missing/td-p/639802

I really feel that if I am paying for a service the least I could expect from a major Telco is a workable email system free of bugs.  I notice that when I open my emails at work then everything is fine but at home is a whole different story.  So there may in fact be something wrong with my settings.  However, the problem only started occuring shirtly after Telstra switched over from hotmail, and I haven't made any changes to my settings so I am finding it hard to believe it's my computer.

Same thing here.

I have had problems with Telstra over the last 2 weeks or more...

First Bigpond emails wouldn't send from my Macmail.  Went on holiday and came back to find no longer sending or receiving.

26 hours combined on the phone over 3 days last week to Apple Care and Telstra...neither could fix the problem as the new IMAP settings wouldn't save on my Mac no matter how many times they tried.

The message from every Telstra person I spoke to - "It's a problem with your computer".  Um no, it isn't for a number of reasons which I explained over...and over...and over...Nobody would listen.

After a GREAT DEAL of frustration (and having about 6 months of sent Bigpond emails deleted by the Telstra guy supposedly assisting me) the premium service people eventually diagnosed the problem - that my Telstra supplied modem is incompatible with their server - it's not even that old!  They ordered me a new modem (supposed to arrive today but of course it didn't) and when I log into my webmail my messages are disappearing without me deleting them.

Could be related to the migration to new server?

Hi PaulK45,

Is this when using an email program or your Webmail?

Hi kim1212,

Are you using an email client or the Webmail?

And has the email been deleted from the trash items, or only from the inbox?

Hi dkr,

Sorry to hear of the blank email issue there.

You mention it seems to be ok at work but not at home, is this when using the same device? Are you accessing Webmail or using an email client?

In the ultimate irony, the manifestly incompetent and negligent Telstra email server is now rejecting emails sent by Telstra itself.

This one just in:

This is not the case in our instance,

Our SPF record is correct, it lists both the IP and Domain of the Foreign Mail servers !

Our issue is as follows;

We use a hosted service for reservation bookings, we have listed thier mail server(s) in our SPF record,

The hosting party sends emails as  ******@ourdomain.com.au on our behalf.

I have checked the headers of the emails originating from thier mail servers and the mail servers are correct.

We have had a response from the reservation/hosting company:

"Thank you.
Please be advised that this issue has just arise with Bigpond - as they have turned something on on there side "

We have no issue in sending to any other domains from the reservation system, I have tested sending to the following domains:

edumail  (IF we have problems they always occur with edumail !).

several other .edu.au domains

vic.gov.au

iinet

aussiebrodband

optus

aanet

tpg

All of the above work fine......

I have run our spf record through every validator that I can find - it passes all.

I have checked both our domain and the reservation system domain gainst blacklist - none blacklisted.

Re: Issues Removing Supension from Online Webmail Account.

They couldnt even find the email account,

as it is not connected to a Telstra home account.

It is just a online web account like yahoo or gmail.

It happened to my other account 18mths ago and they were just able to reset it and all was good.

Have been waiting for a case manager to ring since last Wednesday and when I rang on back yesterday they were ment to ring after 5pm yesterday and not a single call.

Can they be merged to a Telstra Home account without loosing any history?

Do you have a reference for your case manager? If so, can I grab that from you and I will follow up with them what is happening.

As for moving the email to be linked with your Telstra Home account, usually there are no issues with doing that and you don't lose any of your history when it happens.

Hi Carissa1976,

You would have been sent an link, to the email address you used to create your Crowdsupport account. Click on that link to verify youremail, then you'll be able to use private messages. This to stop bots from being able to create accounts and spam private messages.

Hi JodiB12,
How are you going now? Were you able to get your email sent or are you still getting the IB504 error?

I am current unable to receive or send emails through my Bigpond email accounts through either my iMac, iPhone or iPad. I am asked to enter my password in settings and have done this on a number of occasions but it is not accepted. I have reset my password through my Tlestra account so I know it is correct. Grateful ofr any advice on how this can be overcome. Thanks.

Hi,

We also getting the same problem when sending to email addresses with bigpond.com or bigpond.net.au. The errors we are getting are:

  • Connection refused due to exceed max concurrent connections. IB007
  • email@domain.com.au sender rejected. IB504

We have about 1000 clients that use Bigpond email addresses and due to the industry we are in we are breaching our legal requirements as clients are not receiving the documents emailed to them.

Is there a way to escalate this as I have spent hours on the phone to Bigpond support and have gotten nowhere?

Thanks

I am having similar issue, more than 1 MILLION emails were deferred by Bigpond this month.

did you find any solution to fix this issue?

started receiving "Bounce" status (2500 emails) on the 15th Jan 2017.

and started receiving "Deferred" status (800K emails) on the 25th Jan 2015.

I had a phone conversation with 2 bigpond guys yesterday and I am still going nowhere.

The problem with trying to get this escalated via "normal" support folks who are very much trying to help is that they need the problem to be reported by a recipient i.e. the person who is not getting the emails as a result.  They  need to have a Bigpond account holder to report the fault to be able to escalate the problem.

Our backlog has cleared now but both you and I obviously both will need to be added to an exception list somewhere so we can avoid being temporarily blocked.

One of my upstream providers suggested posting on AusNOG to try and get someone from Telstra's NOG folks to provide some insight.  I have not tried this yet.
